About SaveByronBay.org

Byron is visited by thousands of tourists each year for it’s unique alternative culture and arts, but real estate developers and speculators are pushing out the artists and writers that created the culture  that tourists come to see and non resident property owners are making Byron and neighboring Shires unsafe.

My name is Deborah Paulino (nee Hodgson need Morgan) and I am an original co-founder of  the IQ Project www.IQ.org.au and produced programs for youth in Byron Bay in the 1990s.  Since 2000 I've  been living in San Francisco and working with local non profits and large scale street festivals for alternative and creative inner city neighborhoods.

The problems in San Francisco are no different, but from simple news research Byron has an unusually high problem for its population of only 15,000 (Census 2008). This is because with tourists the population jumps to over 30,000 during most of the year and as much as 200,000 during peak tourist season and festivals.

Any local community would have problems with that many visitors all the time, and compounding the problem are little if any community resources or youth programs. What makes it even worse is a local government who have publicly ignored and even denied the growing problem for many years, even when crime statistics stating there is a problem are published at the same time of statements from the local government.

The problem needs to be nipped in the bud now while the local population is still small enough for a fix to be doable.

Save Byron Bay is raising donations to develop low cost eco housing, facilities, and resources for artists, eco designers, community workers, thinkers, and locals who make Northern New South Wales the special and unique cultural place it is. If you love Byron Bay or the idea of it please donate to save it and begin it's healing.

Please help by making a donation today before Byron looses all it’s culture and becomes another generic resort that is too expensive for artists and increasingly unsafe for residents and tourists alike.

Here’s a 5 minute video documentary about some of the problem… made by Marginal Media interviewing Byron Bay residents.
